  1. What problem did the eco club notice?
  2. Why did they reject buying bottles for everyone?
  3. What did they ask students to do instead?
  4. How did the map make this easier?
  5. What changed between the two counts?
  6. Why does this not prove the project caused the change?
  7. How will they make the next comparison fairer?
  8. What can you infer about Daniel’s view of the project?

Welcome to our school podcast. I'm Daniel, and today I'm talking about our lunchtime waste project. Last month, our eco club noticed that the bins were full of packaging. We counted sixty single-use drink bottles in one lunch break. We decided to try a simple change: encouraging students to bring refillable bottles. At first, we wanted the school to buy everyone a new bottle. However, some students already owned one, and buying hundreds of new bottles would cost money and use more materials. So we asked people to use what they already had. We also put a map of the drinking-water taps on the canteen door. After two weeks, we counted thirty-five single-use bottles in one lunch break. That was an improvement, but it wasn't the whole story. Fewer students had been at school that day because two classes were on a trip. Next time, we'll count on several days and compare the number of bottles per student. My advice is to start small, make the change easy, and check your results carefully. A promising number is a reason to investigate, not a reason to stop asking questions.
